Sharon Benjamin Update – December 2007

Post Mildura Festival
Mildura 07 was once again, FANTASTIC!
With Mark doing the sound every night at the Red Cliffs Club for the duration of the Festival, and Sharon doing spots throughout the Mildura Area, the two only got to perform together at a few venues. But a huge Thumbs up to the great backing bands this year!!!
Congrats and thanks once again to organisers, and to the Country Music Fans who supported those wonderful Indie Artists!

Post Broken Hill Festival
After a quick trip home from Mildura to unload PA gear, and to do a gig, Shaz & Maz headed off to Broken Hill Country Music Festival. The pair haven’t made the Broken Hill journey for a number of years – in fact, the last time they made the trek, Sharon wrote one of her previous hit singles ‘Ghost Train’. Once again the backing bands were fab, and the pair had an excellent time. Shaz even got some great pics of the ‘Indian Pacific’ as it took on passengers before heading off to “Span The Land”.

Morning Melodies
Sharon is really enjoying the Morning Melodies Shows she has been doing around the countryside. The show is 2 hrs, and covers music from the 1970’s as far back as the 1900’s. It’s proving wonderfully popular and Sharon has even gained a couple of residency performances for the program, and the supporters are really loving hearing those great old songs again. Check out Sharon’s Gig Guide to see where you can catch one of these ‘Nostalgic Musical Journeys’.

Covers Album
It is well known that Sharon is a talented and award winning song writer. So why is she recording a cover song album???
I’m glad you asked. Sharon has been earning her living as a Professional Entertainer performing the Club circuit since she was 18 years old. So as you can imagine, her cover song repertoire is extensive and very broad. Fans at these live shows have been asking Sharon for many years – we’ve got your originals CD, when can we buy an album of those old songs you sing?
Well, Sharon and Mark have been busy in their Redbak Studios recording a collection of great old Country Tracks, and it’s hoped that the CD should be completed by Tamworth CM Festival in Jan08.

Originals Album
Sharon has also been flat out over the past 18 months with her songwriting. She has been working on a new album as a follow-up to her ‘Perfect Little World’ album, and the recording side to the project is almost completed. The album won’t be released til mid 08, but a single will be lifted around March – So keep an ear out.

Tamworth 08
Here we go again – yet another excellent Country Music FIX!! Can’t wait.
Sharon and Mark will once again be on deck in the Tamworth City Plaza – out the front of K-Mart – so don’t forget to pop in and say Hi!! The program for the plaza this year is one of the best in town!!
Check out Sharon’s Gig Guide to see where you can catch her during the Festival.

Happy Xmas & Merry New Year to yas all, and see you in 2008!!!

Sharon Benjamin Update – August 2007

New Single – Why He Rolls – OUT NOW!!! – NFS 115
Attention DJ’s - Please contact Sharon If you don’t have a copy of ‘Why He Rolls’ for airplay!

Hot on the heels of the news that Sharon’s hit single “Jack Of Diamonds” has entered the European charts, comes the sublime “Why He Rolls”. Yet another of Sharon’s original songs from her ‘Perfect Little World’ album, this song received an honourable mention in the 2006 Unisong Contest.
If JOD was a perfect piece of “old school” country, then Why He Rolls makes a fine claim to the future of country music in Australia. Musically it pays homage while quietly pushing the boundaries with tasty key shifts & harmonies that dip and roll in luscious waves, and a driving beat that’ll get anyone off their chair. Lyrically, it’ll speak volumes to anybody who’s missed the kids growing up, or spent many long cold nights sleeping alone in order to get the bills paid. But then, that’s Why He Rolls.

Don’t forget to check our Sharon’s website at www.sharonbenjamin.com.au
You can now buy Sharon’s albums direct from her website.

U.K. Songwriting Competition – Excellent Result For Sharon!!
Sharon received a dream result this week when notified by the UK Songwriting Competition. Sharon entered three songs into the comp, and all three songs were finalists.
Her recent single ‘Jack Of Diamonds’ got to the Finals with score of 8. ‘A Little Piece Of Me’, which was recently recorded by Aussie legend Reg Poole received a score of 7 (Semi Finalist)
‘He Rides Alone’ which will be out on Craig Giles soon to be released album gained a score of 6 (Semi Finalist) http://www.songwritingcontest.co.uk

The judges' scores are out of ten. Only the winning song in each category received the maximum score of ten and all runners up automatically received a score of nine. Songs with scores of 6 and above passed into the semi finals while scores of five and below did not make it past the semi finals selection panel. All finalists (8 or 9) are considered for winner and runner up positions. A score of seven indicates that your song was very carefully considered for the finals but did not make it and it remained in the semi finals.

Country Dance Night – Queanbeyan
Sharon & Mark recently performed in Queanbeyan and “Country Rocked the joint” with a full on 4hour Country Music dance. The club was thrilled with the support with a packed out result for the night, and there wasn’t a rock and roll song in site. It was Pure country all night with everything from Sharon’s original songs to Haggard and Cash, Gretchen Wilson, Garth, Lefty Frizzell, Dixie Chicks, and even Billy Ray Cyrus reared his Achy Breaky Head! Thanks so much Queanbeyan – you have been COUNTRIFIED!!!

Leanda O’Brien – To Record 2 of Sharon’s Songs!
Fans will soon be treated to a new dose of the wonderful Leanda O’Brien. Leanda is returning to the recording studio for a new project and has chosen to include two of Sharon’s original songs. After a conversation at Mildura CM Festival, Sharon wrote a song specifically for Leanda, which she was drawn to right away. When the demo was sent, another story song caught Leanda’s ear and it has also been included. The project is currently being recorded, and is due out soon.

Smithfield RSL Club – Sharon as special guest
Sharon has been invited to perform as a special guest at the Smithfield RSL on Saturday 22nd September 2007. Sharon & Mark will do a 40 minute set on the night. Lee Forster’s Band will also be appearing. - http://www.smithfieldrsl.com.au

Mildura & Broken Hill
Sharon And Mark will be heading to Mildura shortly for their annual dose of the biggest and best Independent CM Festival in the world!
Mark will again be doing to sound at the Red Cliffs Club, while Sharon will be appearing around the Festival at various venues. Her appearances are listed on the gigs page.
After a quick trip home, the pair will be heading to Broken Hill CM Festival for another 4 day Country Fix.

On A Scarier Note – A Very Close Call!!
Returning home from a gig last in Captains Flat Sunday afternoon, just a few K’s the Sydney side of the Yass Truck stops, Sharon and Husband Mark Hillier were greeted with every musicians greatest fear – A vehicle out of control – air born and heading straight towards them!!! The car had left the dual carriage way heading in the opposite direction and landed barely a metre from the musos car. Luckily when the vehicle hit the road, it pulled suddenly to the left and away from danger. So many what if’s!!! What if Sharon and Mark were in the Right Lane….What if the other car hadn’t suddenly pulled to the left….what if the other car had been a little higher air born and travelled further. Luckily no-one was injured in the incident. Suffice to say to all your muso’s out there…..Take care on the roads!!!!!

Sharon was once again asked to sing a few songs at the Narrandera Aged Activities Centre during Seniors Week. Sharon was most pleased to be asked as the music she chose to sing included old favourites by some of her favourite singers including Ella Fitzgerald, Jim Reeves, Doris Day, Bing Crosby and Vera Lynn. A photo of Sharon performing featured on the front page of the local newspaper, (The Narrandera Argus) which is now posted on Sharon’s gallery page.

Melbourne Tour
Sharon Benjamin & Craig Giles recently took in 3 venues in Melbourne to present 3 very different shows.

Friday night, gig 1 of the tour was Pascoe Vale RSL for The Australasian Country Music Guild. Shaz, Craig, Mark on bass and David on Drums presented a fine mixture of great country music for both the dance and the listening crowd to enjoy. Sharon last performed for the Guild around 12 years ago, and was stoked to discover that they have been going strong since the mid 1960’s with great Country Music pretty much every Friday night.

Gig 2 – Dancin’ Lines 10th Birthday Party – Linedancing Galore!!! Norwood Secondary College hall was converted to a collage of green in the afternoon preceding the line dance spectacular in preparation for the pre - St Pat’s Day party! More than 230 Excited Line Dancers, also draped in green, took over the hall and owned the dance floor for more than 5 hours of Sharon & Craig performing with Cd’s thrown in the breaks. Sharon rallied the crowd into a frenzy when she got down amongst the dancers to line dance with them while she sang for two songs. The night was Fantastic, and extremely GREEN!

Gig 3 – Sunday arvo at Noble Park – A much more relaxed show for the Sunday was well received with heaps of original music as well as old favourites. There were a few dancers, but mostly folks were happy to sit, relax and take in the tunes. Thanks Melbournians for making Shaz & Mark, Craig & Ros feel so welcome, and special thanks to Keith Davies, his wife Yvonne and family for opening your house for the guys to take over! Leaves you all warm and fuzzy. (Pics are on Sharon’s gallery page on the website)

The single is the second lifted from Sharon’s “Perfect Little World” album, which was recorded at Redbak Studios in Leeton. ‘Jack Of Diamonds’, along the with entire album, has been receiving excellent reviews for not only Sharon’s vocal performances and song writing, but also for production and musicianship.

On the worldwide front, ‘Jack Of Diamonds’ recently became the number 1 most played country song in The Netherlands!

Australian Woman’s Weekly Truck
Sharon recently had the opportunity to perform at Leeton’s Mountford Park on the truck organised by Australian Women’s Weekly Magazine, in conjunction with ‘Today’ and the Commonwealth Bank. Sharon’s original songs were very well received, and organisers asked Sharon if she would be in the area for the Wagga Wagga date. After her solo performance at Mulwala Club, Sharon headed off early Sunday morning for Wagga Beach for another spot. The truck will be touring the Country over the next 11 months or so, and the show includes local performers, fashion, makeovers and information as well as funds raised on the day being donated to a selected local charity. Leeton’s chosen charity was Jumpstart, and in Wagga, Country Hope was selected. Keep an eye out in your local Commonwealth Branch to see when the truck will be near you!!!

All Star Country Roadshow
Reg Poole, Craig Giles, Owen Blundell and Sharon Benjamin joined together for a four day tour during February, and the result was spectacular!
With such a wealth of stage experience, and such a wonderful variety of music and comedy, the show turned out to be a hit with full houses on two of the three nights. For over three entertainment packed hours, audiences were treated to fine Australian Original music and some old favourites, side splitting comedy with special guest appearance from Franky J. Spencer, and duets featuring Sharon & Craig, and then Owen & Reg.

Shepparton Line Dancing Afternoon
On the back end of the Roadshow tour, Sharon performed a Linedancing Show at the Shepparton RSL club as part of the Country Music Festival. For 3 hours, Sharon entertained the crowd with great old and new linedancing tracks, and even got down off stage and in amongst the dancers as she sang and danced at the same time!! Previously a Line Dance instructor of over 8 years experience, Sharon is probably the only entertainer in the Country who can Line Dance as she performs!

Sharon Benjamin Update – Dec 2006

New Single – Jack Of Diamonds
NFS 110 – Track 4
OUT THIS WEEK!!!

‘Jack of Diamonds’ is the second single from Sharon Benjamin’s critically acclaimed CD “Perfect Little World”. The previous single “High as Heaven” was well received locally but garnered a lot of airplay and respect worldwide. Two songs from PLW received honourable
mentions in the 2006 International Unisong.

Benjamin’s strength as a songwriter is well recognized in Australia, where her material is in high demand by other country artists, but she’s no slouch as a singer. Sharon Benjamin is possessed of a voice that is as smooth and sweet as honey – well suited to drawing the
emotional depths from her mature and engaging lyrics.

Whilst PLW moves seamlessly across a palate that touches on blues and even calypso, “Jack of Diamonds” comes straight from the deep country heart of the CD with such uplifting confidence that you’d swear it was a long-forgotten classic.
Sharon’s album is available through One Stop Entertainment from any good record store.

Previous Single – High As Heaven – NFS 104 – Track 6

Now, two more of Sharon’s songs are set for release in early 2007. Reg Poole has been busy in the studio (between tours of course) recording two songs for an up and coming Selection release. Reg has chosen a Sharon Benjamin song titled ‘A Little Piece Of Me’ for inclusion on the project.
Craig Giles has also started on recording a new album which will feature an all Australian flavour, and is including a Sharon Benjamin song titled ‘He Rides Alone’.
Both of these projects are being recorded at Redbak Recording Studios – 02 6953 4911 www.redbakstudios.com.au

Sharon Supports Melinda Schnieder
Sharon and Mark had the pleasure of performing as a support to Melinda during her recent tour when the show reached the Griffith Leagues Club. Sharon and Mark hit the stage around 8.30pm to a delighted and surprised audience, and performed a 35min acoustic set of Sharon Benjamin original songs. After a break and an opportunity to talk to fans, Sharon and Mark sat back and enjoyed Melinda and band with the rest of the crowd, then caught up on some backstage chat after the show.

Sharon Benjamin Duo – Coast Tour
One of the best things about being a full time musician is that you sometimes have the opportunity to see some beautiful parts of this Country! Sharon and Mark recently took some time in between gigs for a bit of a look-see around our coastline. The two performed at Bega, Captains Flat, and Merimbula CM Festival as a special guest of Leanda O’Brien. Rhe rest of the week was spent checking out the sights including, Mogo Zoo and township, Kiama Blowhole (which was huge on the day), the Pinnacles, Merimbula Aquarium, and some of the most beautiful mountain and coastal views you’ll see, before heading home via gigs at Mudgee and Lithgow.

Merry Xmas to all, and looking forward to more great Country music in 2007.

Tour with Reg Poole & Owen Blundell

With Reg's and Sharon's new albums both hot at the moment, the pair met up to perform at Bourke recently. With the contrast in styles of these two artists, the show was very well recieved. Next day the entourage of four, Reg's lovely wife Dot who handled the door and product sales and Shaz's hubby Mark who did the sound, heading off to meet up with the talented Owen Blundell for a show at Forbes. Missed Album Launch!!
Sharon's new album was set to be officially launched at the recent Anzac weekend Echuca Workers Country Music Festival. Unfortunately, Sharon and Husband Mark were unable to attend their own launch due to Sharon having come down with a severe viral throat infection. Unable to even talk, Sharon was devastated to miss the 4-day event, and had to stay home and rest. The festival was a successful event with crowds on occasion reaching over the thousands. Heartfelt apologies are offered to everyone who attended and particularly the organisers for Sharon's absence.

Sharon Benjamin Update & Greetings

Well here we are December, 2005 is almost done
It’s times like these we ponder things we’ve lost and things we’ve won
Some may sit and wish for all material they crave
Instead of being thankful for the many gifts they have
So take a breath, rediscover the love that’s around you all the while
The greatest gift doesn’t need to be bought, it’s a plain old fashioned smile…

Craig Giles and Sharon Benjamin’s duo performance of ‘West Texas Waltz’ has been selected in the top 10 of the Victorian & National Country Music Awards 2006 National Duo Section. Black & White Linedance Ball, Sydney
During the recent Mildura CM Festival, Sharon was asked by one of Australia’s most well known line dance Choreographer’s, Michael Vera Lobos, to perform at the Black & White Ball. The Ball was held at Yagoona’s Greyhound Club on Sunday 4th December. Sharon and Mark had a performance on the 3rd in Leeton, so Sharon and her friend Nomi drove out of Leeton on their way to Sydney at around 3am. They arrived at the venue at 10am and set up the PA. The room was decorated to the nines and dancing commenced at about 11.30am. There was a request bracket, and then Sharon’s set began. She has a wide selection of dances in her repertoire and she had plenty to choose from out of the requests that were coming in throughout the day. Cd brackets and Sharon’s live sets continued all afternoon with interruptions only for a beautiful meal, raffle prizes, a quick game of bingo, which was won by none other than Noel Bradey, yet another of our famous choreographers. Dancing went on until around 8.30ish, and a wonderful time was had by all. Photos can be seen on Sharon’s web site at www.sharonbenjamin.com.au
Thanks so much to Strictly Linedance for the wonderful day.

Update June 2005

It's been an interesting few months with all sorts of highlights and disasters all coinciding. Heading to a gig around 8 hours from home, the tour bus decided to throw a leg out of bed so to speak. The fifth gear shaft snapped and luckily we were only a few hours up the road when the disaster struck. Unfortunately there was no way we could make the show. Such is life on the road. We now have a new gear box to continue our travels!

Whitton Fundraising Line Dance For Alzheimer’s
Sharon was a special guest performer at a recent fundraising line dance social held at the Whitton Club on Saturday 30th April. Sharon performed around 15 line dancing favourites and for the majority of these she danced along with the other linedancer’s as she sang the songs. Her performance was very well received and the night was a fantastic success with over $1000 raised for the local Alzheimer’s group. The group was well represented on the night to support and thank organiser’s Naomi Smith and Elizabeth Warr. We were all shocked to here that they receive no Government funding whatsoever, so the money was an enormous boost to their funds for helping local sufferer’s and their families. A Huge thankyou to the 70 or so linedancers and supporters who rocked up on the night.

Forbes, Condobolin And Burke
Sharon recently did a three-day stint of shows solo to some of the driest parts of NSW. Travelling the roads between Condobolin and Burke proved a little isolated to say the least with around 150kms of dirt road, some of which sighted no fences or other daily signs of civilisation that we are so accustomed to. The trip was a real eye opener also to the plight of so much of the Country gripped by the worst drought in over 100 years. Not even a tinge of brown where foliage used to be, just dry red earth. The shows went well and Sharon enjoyed the trip immensely. Hubby bassist Mark was sorely missed however.

Album Finally Underway!
Due to some unforseen going’s on, Sharon’s new album has been delayed but is now well underway with drum track’s almost completed. Sharon’s songwriting continues to grow and song’s chosen for this album range from ballads to upbeat rockin’ country! The album should be ready for the Mildura Country Music Festival at the end of September all being well.
Brand New Single Release - Hopscotch - OUT NOW!!!
"Hopscotch" is Sharon's latest air-play release to be lifted from the "As The Crow Flies" EP.
The fans have really been drawn to this song at Sharon’s live shows, and the recorded version shows why. Tender vocals that reflect and evoke a fragile sense of beauty, sublime harmonies and a wash of slide guitar make a winning combination with production values that turn even the most jaded ear. This radio friendly number jumps out of the speakers, and reminds you that songs can still make you feel.

EP Release - As The Crow Flies
Wistful stories and tales of the road, of childhood suburbia and of dealing with the harder truths. “As The Crow Flies” is the new 6 track release for Sharon Benjamin. It comes as a welcome follow-up to her debut of several years previous which saw chart success as an independent release on the Australian country charts. In a field where rehashes and cliché abound, Sharon appears to go all out to carve new territory in both feel and lyrical outlook. Welcome relief for those who yearn for true country sound but with none of the familiar or well trodden trappings.
